Mile 652-673 Walker Pass to near ridge near Lamont Peak

Ruby got water boiling so we had a nice hot coffee /hot chocolate to start the day. We said goodbye then went over to the trail angel tent to see if anyone needed the extra water we had. We met Meadow Ed, the guy who Cheryl Strayed talks about in her book, 'Wild', about her life and the PCT. Apparently Reese Witherspoon will play her part in the upcoming movie. Ed laughed and said he hoped Brad Pitt will play his part, after all Brad is 50 now, the same age he was when he met Cheryl. Ed's a really nice guy and it was a pleasure talking to him.

For the first 18 miles to the water source we walked in a pizza oven, otherwise known as California Section G of the PCT.  It was particularly hot going down in elevation and I could feel waves of heat circling round my legs.

We met a couple of other hikers at the water source and spent a while there cooling down. We then decided to go on a few more miles to make tomorrow's hike to the next water source easier.

Today's hike was exciting because it was the first time we felt that the desert scenery was starting to give way to alpine wilderness. We got our first glimpses of granite peaks, a taster of what lies ahead in the  high Sierras.  We also saw our first bear! Yes, just after leaving a small creek and heading up the path, a small cub was poking along the trail in front of  us. When it saw us it moved off and started to climb up a tree. We quietly and quickly took  a couple of pictures before moving on. We knew Mummy bear might be near by and didn't want to be between her and her cub.

Found the perfect camp spot on a ridge. Nice sunset, no wind. Pics below include nasty poodlebrush plant and a new lunch item, the spamburger- spam and mayo between 2 croissants.
