Mile 211-231 Ziggy and the Bear's to Mission Creek

Got a good start. After breakfast and saying goodbye to Ziggy and a few other hikers we set off at 6:15.
We passed the a wind farm which was kind if eerie and interesting at the same time. As it was cloudy and cool we made good time and were surprised that we'd already done 9 miles by 10:30am. Water is not an issue on this part of the trail as we were following streams the whole way up, so this meant our packs were relatively light.
We were surprised to meet Frodo, the trail angel we stayed with in San Diego coming along the trail. He recognized us and offered us some yummy homemade peanut butter cookies.
Shortly after that we found a perfect spot for a break. A beautiful spot at the stream next to a giant red dome of a rock. We rested our backpacks against the rock in the shade and went down to the river to soak our feet and filter water. It was idyllic. Until a sudden mega gust of wind whipped my 25 lb backpack which was at least 10 feet away INTO the water. No exaggeration. Also my thermarest pad, a pair of socks and the cover of the water filter landed in the water. Fortunately my lightning quick reflexes and envied eye-hand coordination saved everything from floating downstream. Except one item wasn't floating. My camera, underwater. :( I pulled the poor thing out but it was completely waterlogged and worse, filled with fine grains of sand. I will have to order/ buy a new camera when we get to BigBearLake. Goodbye Panasonic Lumix TZ5, we've shared many a good time together.

The terrain after the camera incident was pretty unphotogenic. Just sand and scrub. Started to get interesting again in the canyons. I could imagine dinosaurs feeling quite at home there.

At todays 15 mile point the trail climbs solidly for another 15 miles, so as we still had energy, we decided to come an extra 5 miles to make tomorrow easier. It's 7:30pm, we are the only people here in this canyon so we washed in the river, had our beef n mash meal and as soon as I write this last word we are having hot chocolate before hitting the sleeping bags. Hey Ingrid :-)

Your both doing an amazing job :-) over 230 miles already, great achievement!

Good that your feet seem to be much better now!

The geek in me needs to ask... how are you managing to post these awesome pics and blog posts in the wilderness? Is their a really good mobile data connection? Will be interesting as I will be blogging from some remote parts on my trip next year!

Keep up the good work,

Ross
