Mile 304-320 Big Bear Arrowhead to 2 miles west of Grass Valley

Last night we had planned to camp at the next water supply at mile 308 but Tracy wanted to stop earlier at a spot she said would be ideal for cowboy camping. ( "In the open air" for those non- Americans, nothing to do with pork, beans or horses.) Sandy, grassy, slightly sloped,  protected and a little off the trail.

Turned out to be a little too sloped and I woke up a couple of times to turn upside down to allow blood to reach other parts of my body. However, with no tent to faff about with we were up and on the trail by 6 am. By 7:45 we reached the next water source and the hot springs! We took full advantage of the hot water and came out gleaming. We even washed our hair in the sulphured water.

After our morning spa we followed the Deep Creek river and beautiful canyon.  The scorching heat was made bearable by the view and our long mid afternoon soak in the stream. A group of us sat in the river with shade umbrellas.

Around 3 pm it was still hot but we got on the trail again, refreshed... for about 5 mins.

At around 5pm we got embroiled in the middle of a Church youth group hiking outing. One 12 yr old Zachary attached himself to us and made our last 2 miles pass very quickly. He talked about his 9 other adopted siblings, one is autistic, one broke his arm, some shared birthdays, we got the scoop. He even told us about a time when his mom got so mad at one of his brothers she threw the laptop against the wall and broke it. Very bright and amusing little guy. When we stopped to make camp he surprised us both by giving us hugs.

Camped right now in a sandy clearing in a dense bushy area having eaten a very nice interpretation of Thai green curry. Not enough water to make hot chocolate, otherwise a great day.

I was so jealous of you guys getting to play in the water. I was too self conscious to strip down to undies to dip! We so love leap frogging with you!
