Mile 1093-1112 South Lake Tahoe to Middle Velma Lake

It took us till 6pm yesterday to sort out our food for the next section so rather than try to hitch at night we stayed another night at Jen and Aaron's house. We slept well and eventually left their house to begin the hitch back to the trail. We got a ride after about 20 mins from a local who does a lot of hiking.

We had full intentions of walking the three miles it would take to get around Echo Lake if it were not for someone, who shall remain nameless (thanks Jen ;) ) planting the "speedboat" seed. Definitely the more thrilling way to view the lake.

The remainder of the day was very pleasant. Nice views and..... for the first time on the trail I listened to music on my iPod. It was fantastic. The combo of sunshine, exercise, great views and music was delightful. Plus, I was improving my Spanish at the same time since I had the song list on random and I would occasionally hit a Michel Thomas lesson. Perfecto.

Ran into two new hikers today, Butters and later we hiked a little while with Cherub from South Africa. Stopped at Velma Lake to camp and had dinner. Not great. First , T realized the lighter was empty, so we spotted some hikers and got extra matches from them. Second, we can't eat the Meat n Mash meal anymore. We had to bury it. The mash part is okay, it's just the combination of the creamy mash texture with the uniform cubes of chewy dry meat and occasional surprise dehydrated green been texture that truly is gaggy. Looking forward to breakfast. Our steadfast muesli with nuts, seeds, raisins, coconut and full fat dehydrated milk ( Nido). Total winner.

It is a still , windless and slightly cool night. Chocolate raisins helped to cleanse our meat n mash palettes. We cleaned in the river, flossed and brushed. Perfect sleeping conditions. Night night.

Well, T&I, that boat ride over Echo Lake was one I took years ago also although in the opposite direction.
