We camped in a small clump of trees last night just in case the wind picked up, as we were on a ridge, but all was well. We hiked down the slopes of Sugarbowl ski resort and arrived at Highway 40 at 8am. There was trail magic waiting for us in a box marked "For PCT hikers". It was a little early for beer but we did very much enjoy an apple, chocolate, a marshmallow and graham cracker. Just three miles after that we ran into Highway 80 at Donner Summit- a famous spot where an immigrant pioneer family, the Donners, screwed up big time and missed getting over the mountain summit before the snow arrived by a day and consequently had to spend the winter there. They ended up eating each other until Spring arrived. Needless to say only a few survived.
There is a plaque commemorating the Donner Party at the roadside rest area where the highway and PCT connect. Tracy washed her socks in the women's bathroom, we charged our devices and got rid of trash and had our cereal at one of the picnic tables. Several people came up to us to ask questions about the PCT.
After our rest we caught up with Cherub, and walked with her for the rest of the day until we reached camp. We ate dinner together, and were amused when I had to dunk my hand into hot chicken soup to rescue the lighter Cherub kindly lent/ threw towards me.
Kind of forgot to take photds today hence the single picture of a lumpy tree.
